What are Tim Tams?

Tim Tams are a popular Australian biscuit made by Arnotts. They have a chocolate biscuit base, cream centre and are covered in milk chocolate. Have you heard of the Tim Tam slam?

If you don’t have Tim Tams where you live, they are also common in New Zeaalnd, Penguin biscuits in the UK are very similar.

Tips and Tricks

Work quickly – The longer your hands are touching the ingredients the quicker they will start to melt and misshape. Work as quickly as you can rolling them into balls before covering with coconut so they can go back into the fridge to set completely.

Don’t skip the fridge – The mixture needs to be refrigerated for 20-30 minutes or it will melt into a sticky mess. Make sure you do not skip this step!

Add additional ingredients – There are endless options here, dried fruit or nuts for example. Additional ingredients will add more flavour and texture!

Freeze the Tim Tam Balls – This will keep them fresher for longer but also they are delicious eaten from frozen. A summer treat or just a more firm texture.

Double or Triple the recipe – I often will double the recipe as these are perfect for stashing in freezer and bonus you use up a full tin of sweetened condensed milk. If you do have half a tin leftover you can use it up these recipes.

Sweetened Condensed Milk or Cream Cheese?

This depends on the flavour and richness you are after. I prefer sweetened condensed milk but this is just a personal preference.

Sweetened condensed milk will add sweetness and bind the Tim Tams together without adding too much extra flavour.

Cream Cheese will turn the Tim Tam Balls into a more cheesecake tasting truffle. These will be richer but by no means less delicious!

Variations

Tim Tam Slice

Follow the same recipe but instead of rolling the mixture into balls, press it into a square baking tin. Sprinkle with coconut and leave to set before slicing up. This is even quicker to make as you don’t need to roll each individual ball!

Tim Tam Cheesecake Balls

To make these more like truffles use cream cheese instead of sweetened condensed milk. You’ll need half a block or 125g of softened cream cheese.

White Chocolate Tim Tam Balls

Use white chocolate Tim Tams and follow the same recipe. A pack of white chocolate Tim Tams has one less biscuit so the mixture will be a little softer in texture.

Tim Tam Christmas Balls

Truffles and small desserts are always a Christmas recipe favourite. To get these in the Christmas spirit try adding a little rum to the mixture! About a tablespoon will do.

Peppermint Tim Tam Balls

Add 1/2 tsp of peppermint essence to the mixture. Chocolate and mint is one of my favourite combinations.

Raspberry Tim Tam Balls

Stir in 1/4 cup of fresh or defrosted raspberries into the Tim tam mixture. The mixture will be a little softer than without.

Tim Tam Ball Ingredients

Tim Tams – One packet of Original Tim Tams. White Chocolate Tim Tams can also be used to make White Chocolate Tim Tam Balls.

Sweetened Condensed Milk – Half a tin is needed but the recipe can be doubled or check out these recipes to use up the other half of the tin.

Desiccated Coconut – Coconut is my favourite way to cover the balls but anything else can be used such as crushed Tim Tams, melted chocolate, 100s and 1000s, chocolate hail.

How to Make Tim Tam Balls

Add one packet of Tim Tams to a food processor and blitz until you have fine crumbs. Alternatively use a bag and a heavy object like a rolling pin to crush the biscuits by hand.

Transfer the Tim Tam crumbs to a mixing bowl and pour in half a tin of sweetened condensed milk. Fold the ingredients together until well combined.

Place the mixture into the fridge for 20-30 minutes to firm up before rolling into balls.

Scoop out 2 tablespoon amounts of the mixture and roll between your hands to create a ball. Roll around in desiccated coconut and place on a tray.

Transfer the Tim Tam Balls into the fridge for 1-2 hours to set.

Storage

Keep the Tim Tam Balls in an airtight container in the fridge for up to two weeks or place into the freezer for up to 3 months. They are best served slightly chilled or at room temperature if you prefer a softer texture.
