Mars Bar

Origin of Mars Bar Slice

Most popular in Australia but the Mars Bar slice can also be found in New Zealand and the UK. It’s a popular childhood treat, you can definitely find it at many birthday parties!

It was first created in Australia but any more detail is hard to find!

Mars Bar vs Moro Bar

Mars Bars and Moro Bars are actually very similar in ingredients and flavour. They’re both confectionary bars with layers of nougat, caramel and covered in milk chocolate.

Even though this recipe is called Mars Bar Slice you can easily substitute with Moros. Simply switch the same amount of Moro Bars for Mars Bars. The slice wont be 100% the same, but very very similar!

Tips and Tricks

  • Melting
    • Heat the Mars Bars and butter over low heat as the mixture will catch easily on the bottom of the pan.
    • The nougat in the Mars Bars will take a while to fully melt. Using a whisk will help it incorporate easier.
  • Texture
    • Cut an extra Mars Bar into bite sized pieces and stir through the rice bubbles. This will give extra texture to the slice.
    • Try adding roasted unsalted peanuts or mini marshmallows to the slice for something different! Dried fruit could also be added.
    • The slice will be chewy cold from the fridge but if you find it too hard, serve at room temperature instead.
  • Slicing
    • Let the slice come up to room temperature first.
    • Use a sharp knife and run it under hot water for 10 seconds to heat it up.
    • Clean the knife with a paper towel in between each cut.
Mars Bar Slice Ingredients

Mars Bar Slice Ingredients

  • Rice Bubbles – A puffed rice cereal, also known as rice krispies, ricies or rice pops.
  • Mars Bars – A popular caramel and nougat chocolate bar. Moro Bars can also be used here which are very similar to mars bars or any other chocolate bar that is caramel and nougat flavoured.
  • Butter – Salted or unsalted butter can be used in this recipe.
  • Chocolate – I like to use dark chocolate but milk chocolate can also be used here. Try to use a bar of eating chocolate for the best quality.

How to Make Mars Bar Slice

Line an 8″ or 20cm square baking pan with non stick paper.

Cut the mars bar into small pieces so it will melt easier.

mars bar and butter

Place the mars bar pieces and butter into a medium sized saucepan over low heat.

Stir occasionally until melted, about 5 minutes. The mixture will look separated and oily as the nougat melts but just continue to stir until smooth.

Pour the melted butter and mars bars into a bowl with the rice bubbles.

Fold the rice bubbles and melted mars bar mixture together until well combined. It will be very thick and sticky.

Press the mixture into the baking pan with the back of a spoon or offset spatula. Make sure to firmly press the mixture down for the best results.

Melt the chocolate over a double boiler on in the microwave in 20 second bursts until smooth.

Pour over the slice and tilt the baking pan to spread the chocolate out evenly.

Place the mars bar slice into the fridge to firm up, about 4 hours or overnight.

Remove the slice from the fridge 30 minutes before slicing. Use a hot sharp knife to slice it into squares.
